Family History

William Edward Starkey was born in 1875 the son of Herbert a carpenter and Martha Starkey. His father was born in 1851 in Bulwell, his mother in 1853 also in Bulwell. They were married in 1874. William Edward married Caroline Collis (b.1878 Ely, Cambridgeshire) on 18th April 1897 at St Ann Church, Tottenham, London. They had 6 children Annie b.1897 Tottenham, Florence (1900-1917) b.Tottenham, James b.1903 Brockley, Kent, John b.1905 Brockley , George b.1908 Brockley and William Edward b. Edmonton (1912-1912). In 1911, they lived at 5,1 Osman Road Tottenham, London and later at 48, Osman Road. Caroline Starkey was awarded a weekly pension of 25/- for herself and four children.

Military History

William Edward Starkey enlisted on 7th September 1914 at Islington, London. Posted to 8th Battalion The Buffs (East Kent Regiment), he joined them at Canterbury on 9th September 1914. He landed in France on 7th October 1915 and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial Pier & Face 5D.
