Owen Riley was born in 1889 in Nottingham and was the son of Thomas Riley a coal miner and Catherine Riley (née Bowen) of 32 Liddington Street, New Basford. His father was born in 1859 (place unknown) and his mother Catherine Bowen was born in 1863 in Wednesbury, Staffordshire. They were married in 1885. Catherine already had a child, Agnes Anne b.1883 Nottingham and the couple went on to have the following children, William b.1885 Nottingham, Annie b.1887 Nottingham , Owen b.1890 Nottingham, Jane b.1895 Knottingley and Catherine b.1895 Thurscoe. In 1901 they were living at 17 Bailey Street, Basford. Catherine was head of the family, her husband not being present. In 1911 they lived at 50 Reigate Road, Basford. Jane was a cardboard box maker and Catherine a curtain finisher. Owen Riley’s address in 1911 is unknown.
Owen Riley enlisted at Mexborough on 11th August 1914. He stated he had seen previous serve with the territorial army. He joined the 6th Battalion York & Lancaster Regiment at their barracks at Pontefract. On the 2nd July 1915 he saw his first theatre of war in the Balkans. Helles Memorial Panel 171 to 173
Riley's army service record survives and includes a form for stoppages of pay in regard to an illegitimate child. The order made on 19th December 1914 on behalf of the child’s mother Ethel Bowen of 29 Victoria Street, Goldsthopre is for the payment of 3 shillings and sixpence a week from the date of the child’s birth, 1st November 1914 until the child should reach the age of sixteen.
