Ernest Raymond Goodman

Ernest was the son of William Henry Goodman and Elizabeth Goodman nee Seed. William Henry was born in Norfolk in 1869 and baptised on 6 February 1870 at Kirby Cane, Norfolk. Elizabeth was born on 22 February 1866 in Lancashire, the daughter of James and Mary Seed. She was baptised on 16 January 1868 at Standishgate Methodist Chapel, Wigan, Lancashire. William (25) and Elizabeth were married on 1 September 1894 at St Mary's Chapel, Great Sankey, Lancashire. They had at least four children: William Harold b. 31 July [1897] in Manchester, baptised 12 September1897 at St Chrysostom, Victoria Park, Manchester; the baptismal record shows he was the son of William Henry (a coachmaker) and Elizabeth Goodman of 10 Blackstock Street [Manchester], Ernest Raymond b. Penketh 1899 (O/N/D Warrington, Lancs.), Florence Kathleen b. Nottingham 6 December 1901 (1902 J/F/M Nottingham) and Harry J b. Nottingham 12 May 1905 (A/M/J Nottingham). In 1901 William (31), a carriage maker, and Elizabeth (34 b. Widnes) were living at 38 Clapham Street, Old Radford, with their two sons, William (3) and Ernest (1). Elizabeth Goodman died in 1908 (J/A/S Notitngham) aged 42. In 1911 the widowed William Henry (41), a coachmaker motor (body maker), was living at 165 Gladstone Street, Sherwood Rise, Nottingham. In the home on the night of the census were his children William (13), Ernest (11), Florence (9) and Harry/Henry (6). Also in the household were the widowed Mary Seed (72), Elizabeth's mother, and Martha Seed (38, b. Penketh) who was Elizabeth's sister. William Goodman died in 1913 (J/A/S Nottingham) aged 43. Ernest and his siblings may have moved north to Lancashire to live with their mother's relatives after their father's death in 1913 as they can be traced to the north-west in 1939 at the time of the compilation of the Register of England & Wales. Martha Seed (b. 14 August 1872) who was unmarried, was living at 1 Kingsley Drive, Cheadle & Gatley, Cheshire, with her nephew Henry J Goodman, a solicitor's clerk. Florence K Goodman, whose occupation was described as 'plain cook', was living at 9 Brook Gardens, Blackpool, Lancashire, although this was probably her home and not a place of work. The eldest child, William Harold Goodman, has not yet been traced on the 1939 Register. An aunt, Mrs Seed, of 8 Linwood Grove, Longsight, Manchester, was notified of Ernest's death in August 1916. Although the record describes the aunt as 'Mrs' Seed it is likely this was Elizabeth's unmarried sister, Martha Seed, who in 1911 was living in Nottingham with her widowed brother-in-law William Goodman and his children. Martha died in 1963 (Mar Stockport Cheshire) aged 90.
