Family History

George Ellis was born in 1892 at Silverdale, Staffordshire and was the son of Samuel a coal miner hewer and Mary Ann Ellis née Farmer of 99 Meden Bank, Stanton Hill, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. His father Samuel was born in 1873 at Market Draycott, Shropshire, his mother Mary Ann Farmer was also born in 1873 at Silverdale, Staffordshire, they were married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Wolstanton, Staffordshire registration district, they went on to have 11 children, sadly 2 died in infancy or early childhood, their children listed in the 1911 census were, George b1892 Silverdale, Samuel b1895 Silverdale, Doris Ann b1899 Nuneaton, Bertha b1903 Nuneaton, Edward b1907 Nuneaton, Phyllis b1909 Nuneaton and Stanley b1911 Skegby, Nottinghamshire. In the 1911 census the family are living at 99 Meden Bank, Stanton Hill, Skegby, they were shown as Samuel Ellis 38 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 38 yrs and their children, George 19 yrs coal miner ganger pony driver, Samuel 16 yrs a coal miner pony driver, Doris Ann 10 yrs a scholar, Bertha 8 yrs a scholar, Edward 4 yrs, Phyllis 2 year and Stanley 8 months old. George married his wife Sarah Ann Sankey (born 22nd April 1894) in 1914 at Mansfield, they lived at High Street, Stanton Hill, Mansfield, they went on to have a daughter Georgina born 20th August 1917. Following George’s death his widow Sarah Ann was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 20th October 1917.

Military History

Private 18181 George Ellis enlisted at Mansfield and served with the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 27th August 1915.and he was killed in action on 9th April 1917 and is buried at Ypres Reservoir Cemetery, Ypres Belgium.
