Alfred Pinkney was born in 1886 the son of Alfred, a plasterer’s labourer, and Hannah Pinkney née Ford. His father was born in 1856 at Derby and died 10/1/1909 aged 56. His mother was born in 1855 at Derby. Married in 1877, they had twelve children. Alfred’s siblings surviving infancy were Elizabeth b.1878, John b.1884, Alfred b.1886, Bridget b.1888, Sabina Mary b.1890, Joseph b.1892, Jane b.1896 and Lawrence b.1898. In 1901 they lived at 48 Walker Lane, Derby. In 1911 the family lived at 7 Oswald Terrace Hyson Green, Nottingham but Alfred was lodging with John Munton and family at 40 St Bede’s Street Rotherham. Alfred married Ethel Morrell in 1913 and they lived at 13 Searl Street, Derby.
Alfred Pinkney enlisted at Derby and died of wounds received on 31st July. He is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery Grave Reference: XX.O.20
Two of his brothers also died during the Great War. Joseph Pinkney died on 29th July 1915 and Lawrence Pinkney was killed in action on 27th April 1918. In Memoriam published 31st July 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post: “PINKNEY. – In loving memory of Pte. Joseph Pinkney, died of gas poisoning, July 29th, 1915; also Pte. Alfred Pinkney, died of wounds August 5th, 1917, received in action July 31st, both Sherwood Foresters. – Fondly remembered by loving mother and family.
