Samuel McClure was born in 1898 the son of John William (b.1852 Sneinton) a case hardener in a cycle works and Harriett McClure née Hooley (b.1860 Wollaton). Married in 1881, they had ten children and eight of Samuel’s siblings survived infancy - George William b.1882 Stapleford, Tom b.1884 Stapleford, May b.1885 Stapleford, Edith b.1887 Stapleford, Albert William b.1891 Ilkeston, John b.1893 Ilkeston, Harriett Hooley b.1894 Ilkeston, and Kenneth b.1902 Radford. In 1911 they lived at 75 Trafalgar Street Radford. George and Albert made cycles, Harriet cigars whilst Samuel and Kenneth were at school. It would appear that some of the family moved to the Birmingham area around the time that Samuel enlisted to live at of 66, Frederick Road, Aston.
Samuel McClure enlisted at Birmingham and landed in France on 13th October 1915. He died of wounds on 20th July 1916. He is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, Grave Reference: XIV. C. 9A
Death notice published Nottingham Evening Post 24th July 1916: 'McCLURE. – Died of wounds, July 20th, in hospital in France, Private Sam McClure, Royal Warwicks, fourth son of J. W. and H. McClure. Deeply mourned by all.' In memoriam published Nottingham Evening Post 20th July 1917. 'McCLURE. – In loving memory of our dear son, Private Sam McClure, who died July 20th, 1916,of wounds received in action, in his 19th year. – Ever in the thoughts of all at 66, Frederick-road, Aston, Birmingham.'
