Ernest was the youngest son of Frederick and Esther Walker and the husband of the late Harriett Walker (née Wolfe). Frederick and Esther Walker were both born in Nottingham and had at least eight children: Elizabeth, Ann b. abt 1867, Mary Ellen b. 23 December 1869, Florence Minnie b. 1872 (A/M/J Nottingham), Edward, Ada, Ernest b. 30 June 1883 and Ethel. All the children were born in Nottingham. In 1881 Frederick (36), a tailor, and Esther (36) a machinist, were living at 7 Middle Marsh, Nottingham with their children Elizabeth (17) a machinist, Ann (14) a lace finisher, Mary Ellen (11), Florence Minnie (9), Edward (6) and Ada (5 months). The family was still living in Nottingham in 1891. Seven of Frederick and Esther's children were living at home: Elizabeth (27), Mary Ellen (21), Minnie (19), Edward (17), Ada (10), Ernest (7) and Ethel (about 1 year). Two of Ernest's sisters married shortly after the 1891 Census: Mary Ellen married Arthur Brasier in 1891 (J/A/S Nottingham) and Florence Minnie married Albert Edward A Parrott in 1893 (J/F/M Nottingham). Frederick Walker predeceased his wife Esther who died on 9 January 1900 at the age of 53. At the time of her death Esther was living at 76 Clarence Street, Nottingham. By the time of the 1901 Census, the year following their mother's death, Ernest (17) and two of his sisters Ada (20) and Ethel (10) were living with their married sister, Mary Ellen Brasier, at 24 St Stephen's Road, Sneinton. Mary (31) and her husband, Arthur (32), a railway foreman platelayer, had two daughters, Florence (8) and Nellie (6). Ernest has not yet been traced on the 1911 Census and may have already emigrated to Canada where it seems likely that he married his wife, Harriett. Of Ernest's siblings: Elizabeth also appears to have emigrated to Canada as Ernest named his sister, Elizabeth Savage of Winnipeg, as his next of kin when he joined the army. Ann has not been traced after the 1881 Census. Mary Ellen (Brasier), her husband Arthur, a railway guard, and two daughters were living on Lees Hill Street, Sneinton, in 1911. She and Arthur (b. 30 January 1869) were still living in Nottingham at the time of the 1939 England and Wales Register. Mary Ellen died in 1951 (Sep Nottingham) aged 81. Florence Minnie (Parrott) and her husband Albert had nine children of whom only seven were still living at the time of the 1911 Census: Fred, Arthur, Albert, George, Florence, Annie and John. At least two of their sons, Fred and Arthur, served in the war. Florence died in October 1933 aged 61. Edward has not yet been traced after the 1891 Census. Ada was married by the time of the Ernest's death in 1917 as she placed an 'In Memoriam' notice in the local paper on the first anniversary of his death in the name of herself, her husband (Will) and their children. Ethel has not yet been traced after the 1901 Census.
Canadian Field Artillery 4th Brigade Ernest enlisted in Winnipeg, Canada on 26th August 1915. He gave his next of kin as his sister Elizabeth Savage of 806 Lipton Street, Winnipeg. Driver Walker was serving with the 27th Canadian Field Battery when on the night of the 25th/26th September 1917 he was riding a team of six horses and ammunition limber and was thrown from his horse. The limber passed over him causing injuries to his back and pelvis. He was admitted to hospital but died from his injuries on 28th September; the cause of death was given as a fractured pelvis and ruptured bladder. He was buried in Barlin Communal Cemetery Extension (grave ref. II.D.33).
