Family History

He was the stepson of Edward Walton (died 1910) and the son of Mary Elizabeth Squires (later Topham). He was the brother of Thomas, Beatrice, Grace Newcome Squires. In 1911 they lived at 28B, Windmill Lane, Sneinton, Nottingham. Jack and his mother and two sisters Grace Newcombe and Beatrice Squires emigrated to Canada, they left Liverpool England on 24th September 1913 on board the Ship 'Virginia' bound for Quebec and Montreal, he was 16 yrs of age and a clerk.

Military History

Private Jack Squires enlisted on 11th August 1915 at Toronto, Canada, giving his age as 19 yrs and his occupation as a rubber worker. He stated his next of kin was his sister Grace Newcomb Squires of 1367 Queen Street, Toronto. He served with the 24th battalion, Canadian Infantry. He landed in France in December 1915 and was killed in action on 17th September 1916. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Vimy Ridge Memorial.
