John Robert Smith was born on 6th February 1890 at Newark and was the son of the late John William Smith and Mary Ann Smith née Cavey of Newark. His father John William Smith was born in 1867 in Risegate, Lincolnshire and his mother Mary Ann Cavey was born in 1871 at Newark, they were married in 1889 at Newark and went on to have the following children, John Robert Smith b1890 Newark, Mary Ellen Smith b1891 Newark and Alfred b1902 East Stoke. his mother Mary Ann Smith re married on 9th June 1903 at East Stoke to John Padgett (b1851 a farm labourer) they went on to have 4 further children, Elizabeth Padgett b1904, William Padgett b1907, John Padgett b1908 and Alice Padgett b1910. In the 1911 census the family are living at East Stoke vllage and are shown as John Padgett 60 yrs a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Mary Ann Padgett 40 yrs and their children, John Robert Smith 21 yrs a farm labourer, Alfred Smith 9 yrs a scholar, Elizabeth Padgett 7 yrs a scholar, William Padgett 4yrs, John Padgett 3 yrs and Alice Padgett 1 yr. John Robert emigrated to Canada prior to the Great War

Military History

Lance Corporal John Robert Smith enlisted on 1st December 1915 at St Thomas, Canada and served with the 4th (Reserve) Bn formerly 18th Bn Canadian Infantry. He landed in England on 7th April 1917 and died on 3rd February 1919 of pneumonia. He is buried at St Oswald's Churchyard, East Stoke.
