Joseph Parry Rippon was born on 12th May 1891 at Nottingham, he was the son of Joseph a wood sawyer and Emma Rippon néé Messam and the brother of Alice, Caroline, James, Thomas and John Rippon.

His father Joseph was born in 1854 at Kinoulton, Nottinghamshire, he died in 1915 aged 61 yrs at Fort Saskatchewan, Edmonton, Canada his mother Emma Messam was born in 1850 at Greetham, Rutland, she died in 1926 aged 75 yrs in Edmonton, they were married on 21st October 1879 at St Marys Church, Greetham, Rutland, they went on to have 6 children.

In 1891 the family lived at 13 Grove Road Lenton Nottingham.

In the 1911 census the family were living at 20 Scotsgate, Stamford, Lincolnshire Joseph Rippon 56 yrs is a wood sawyer at a joinery works, he is living with his wife Emma 60 yrs and their children, Alice Emma 31 yrs a cosmetic maid, Caroline Amy 28 yrs a cosmetic maid and John Barrett Rippon 21 yrs a joiner.

At some time before the 'Great War' Joseph Rippon and his family emigrated to Canada

Military history

Private Joseph Pary Rippon enlisted on 5th May 1915 at Edmanton, Canada, giving his date of birth 12th May 1891, he was 24 yrs old, his next of kin was his mother Mrs E Rippon of Eastgate , Allington, England. his occupation was that of a fireman. he was posted to the 49th Bn Canadian Infantry. He was killed in action on 5th December 1916 in the trenches northeast of Neuville St. Vaast, he is buried at Ecoivres Military Cemetery Mont-St. Eloi Grave Reference III J 14
