George Herbert Powell known as 'Bert' was born on 29th June 1891 in Nottingham and was the son of Robert a life insurance agent and Sarah Powell née Brunt of 6 Clifford Street, Nottingham Robert was born in 1852 at Bridport, Dorset, he died in 1913 aged 61 yrs, Sarah Ann Brunt was born in 1854 at Nottingham, they were married in 1876 at Nottingham and had 5 children sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood George was the husband of Elizabeth May Powell of 32 Madeira Place Parliament Street Toronto Canada At the time of his enlistment on 16th August 1915 he gave his next of kin as his wife living at 48 McGill Street, Toronto. They had a daughter

Military History

George Herbert Powell, 18th Canadian Infantry Battalion, enlisted on 16th August 1915 at Toronto, Canada giving his age as 24 yrs and 2 months and his occupation as that of a clerk. He was killed in action on 12th April 1916 by a rifle shot to the head and died instantly and is buried in Voormezeele Enclosure No. 3.

Death notice published 16th May 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- POWELL. – Killed in action, April 12th, Private G. H. (Bert) Powell, Canadian Infantry, beloved husband of May, Toronto, and dearly loved brother of Florence Simpson, 91, Russell-road. He gave his life for the Homeland.” In memoriam published 12th April 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- POWELL. – Killed in action, April 12th, Private G. H.
