John Southern Marriott was born on 2nd January 1884 at Farnsfield and was the son of William a farm labourer Sabina Marriott née Southern of Rufford Forest , Farnsfield. His father William was born in 1855 at Farnsfield, his mother Sabina Southern was born in 1856 at Dry Doddington they were married in 1875 their marriage was recorded in the Newark Registration district they went on to have 12 children, sadly three were to die in infancy or early childhood, their children were, Eliza Southern b1876 Dry Doddington, William b1878, Alfred William b1882,John Southern b1884, George b1887, Lucy Annie b1888, Frank b1891, Robert b1893 and Mary Ellen b1896, all the children except Eliza Southern were born in Farnsfield. In the 1911 census the family are living at Rufford Forest, Farnsfield and are shown as William 56 yrs a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Sabina 55 yrs and their children, Frank 20 yrs a farm labourer, Robert 18 yrs a farm labourer and Mary Ellen 15 yrs. John Southern emigrated to Canada and married his wife Dora E. S. Marriott, of 302, 14th Avenue South, Seattle, Washington, U.S.A.

Military History

Prive John Southern Marriott enlisted in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada on 4th January 1918, he gave his age as 34 yrs and stated he was a miner, he was living at Bush Hotel, Seattle U.S.A , his next of kin was his wife Dora E S Marriott of the same address. He served with the 7th battalion Canadian Infantry and was killed in action on 27th September 1918 and is buried at Quarry Cemetery, Marquion, Pas de Calais, France.
