George Henry Joseph Hunt was born on 27th March 1894 at Ordsall and was the son of George a foreman joiner and Martha Hunt née Spittlehouse of 31 Grove Street, New Balderton, Newark. His father George was born in 1872 at North Scarle and his mother Martha Spittlehouse was born in 1869 at Treswell, Nottinghamshire, they were married in 1892 at East Retford and went on to have the following children, Elizabeth b1892 Ordsal, George Henry Joseph b1894 Ordsall, Walter b1895 Ordsall, Percy William b1901 Balderton, Arthur b1904 Balderton and Edith Alice b1908 Balderton. In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 31 Grove Street, New Balderton and are shown as George 39 yrs a foreman joiner, he is living with his wife Martha 42 yrs and their children, Elizabeth 19 yrs a dressmaker, Walter 16 yrs an apprentice iron moulder, Percy William 10 yrs a scholar, Arthur 7 yrs a scholar and Edith Alice 3 yrs. In the same 1911 census we find that George has left the family home, he is living at Cowtham House Farm, Balderton he is shown as being 16 yrs of age and one of two waggoners living with William Richards 41 yrs a farmer and his wife Minnie 41 yrs and their family. George emigrated to Canada in 1912.
Private George Henry Joseph Hunt enlisted at Portage La Prairie on the 26th Oct. 1914, when he gave as occupation, bridge-builder. He served with the 27th battalion Canadian Infantry and came over with the second contingent. He was killed in action on 15th September 1916 his name commemorated on the Vimy Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.
His brother Private Walter Hunt enlisted at Newark, he served with the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 2nd March 1915 and was killed in action on 24th April 1915 he is buried at Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery, Heuvelland, Belgium. grave reference E.73 Article published on 6th December 1916 in the Newark Advertiser :- Eldest son of George & Martha Hunt, 31 Grove Street, New Balderton. Born 27th March 1894. Went out to Canada about two years before the outbreak of war. Enlisted at Portage La Prairie on the 26th Oct. 1914, when he gave as occupation, bridge-builder. Came over with the second contingent. He was some time ago wounded in the heel, but recovered, returning to the front earlier this year, but however, did not rejoin his battalion until just before he was killed. His brother Walter was killed in 1915.
