Frederick was born at Elston on 26th May 1882 and was baptised at All Saints on 25th June 1882. He the son of John and Jane Hickman. Frederick’s father John Hickman was born in Elston in about 1848 the son of an agricultural labourer. Frederick’s mother Jane Hickman (née Sanderson) was born in East Stoke in 1850 and was baptised at St Oswald’s on 4th August 1850. At some point Frederick decided to go to Canada where he married Lucy Craddock on 29th October 1907 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. At the time of the Canadian 1916 census Frederick was staying with his brother William in Alberta. Frederick had 2 children, Mary Elizabeth born in 1913 and Marguerite Delphine born in 1917. Frederick returned to Canada in 1917. He returned to France via Liverpool in November 1917.

Military History

Frederick joined up in the Canadian army on 17th January 1916 in Calgary, Alberta, he and his wife were living in Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Canada. Frederick was described as a farmer on his Attestation Papers. He served with the Military Police Corps. Faubourg D'Amiens Cemetery Arras 7.D.24
