Herbert (Bert) Edward Harris was born on 11th January 1888 in Nottingham and was the son of George Harris, a builder's book keeper and the late Amy Champion Harris née Day of Nottingham, His father George was born in 1843 in Nottingham , his mother Amy Champion Day was born in 1849 in Charing, Kent, they were married in 1867 in West Ashford, Kent and went on to have the following children, Elizabeth b1872, Susan b1874, Francis b1875, William b1879, Olive b1880, Emily Day b1883, Edith Millicent b1884, Herbert Edward b1888 and Agnes Champion b1895, all the children were born in Nottingham. His mother Amy died in 1904 in Nottingham she was 56 yrs old. In the 1911 census the family are living at Rock Cottage, 14 Eyres Gardens, Windmill Lane, Sneinton, Nottingham and are shown as George 68 yrs a widow a builders book keeper, he is living with his children Emily Day 28 yrs a shop assistant, Edith Millicent a housekeeper for her father and Agnes Champion 16 yrs a milliners apprentice.
Pte. Herbert Edward Harris, 16th Canadian Infantry Battalion, enlisted on 20th December 1915 at Winnipeg, Manitoba, he gave his address as 408 Mcdermot Ave, Winnipeg, Manitoba, he was a clerk and he gave his next of kin as his sister A.E. Harris of Rock Cottage, Sedgley Ave, Sneinton, Nottingham. He was killed in action on 8th October 1916. He has no known grave and is commemorated on Vimy Memorial.
