Charles Halford Clay was born on 20th November 1891 at Nottingham, the son of George Thomas a lace maker and the late Ann Clay (née Bradley). Of 47 Sherbrook Road, Carrington, His father was born in 1858 in Derby and his mother was born in 1862 at Radford, she died in 1911 aged 49 yrs, they were married on 16th May 1880 at Christ Church, Nottingham, they had 10 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood. - Amelia b.1883, Isaac b.1888, William Robert b.1890 George Thomas b.1891, Charles Halford b.1891, Albert b.1894, Elizabeth Ann b.1896 and John b.1898. In the 1911 census the family lived at 43, Nottingham Road Nottingham. George Thomas 53 yrs is a lace maker, he is living with his wife Ann 49 yrs and 5 of their children, including Charles Halford 19 yrs a bookstall assistant on the railways.

Military History

Charles Halford Clay attested on 4th April 1916 at Parkhill, Ontario. he served with the 75th battalion Canadian Infantry, he was killed in action on 15th August 1917 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Vimey Ridge Memorial, France.

Extra Information

Two of his brothers served during the Great War and survived . Albert Clay served with the 7th Battalion Sherwood Forester and George Thomas Clay with the Royal Field Artillery. additional research and information Peter Gillings
