In 1911 (census) he was living at 8 Key Street, Windmill Lane, Nottingham with his parents, Harry and Emma Burton, two brothers, JEH [James] (28) and Harry (12) and a sister, Sarah (18). His parents had been married for 29 years and had had 12 children of whom only six were living. At the time of the 1901 Census the family was living at 28 Lees Yard, Nottingham; children: James (17), Letitia (16), Samuel (15), Sarah (7), William (5) and Harry. On William's attestation paper (1915) he gives his father's address as 29 Meredith Street, Nottingham. At the age of 17 William sailed from Liverpool to Halifax, Nova Scotia, on the SS Virginian, arriving 22 March 1913, sponsored by Oliver Hind's juvenile emigration scheme through which he would have trained in agricultural skills on Dakeyne's Farm in Nova Scotia.
