Herbert Lawrence was the son of Frederick Bullivant and his first wife Mary Elizabeth Bullivant (née Bottomley). Frederick was born in Kirton, Nottinghamshire, in 1865, and Mary Elizabeth in Derbyshire in about 1869 and in 1871 was living with her parents in Whitwell. Frederick and Mary Elizabeth were married in Whitwell parish church on 24 July 1889 and had four children who were born in Whitwell: Charles Wilfred (k/a Wilfred) b. 12 April 1890, Walter b. 29 October 1891, Herbert Lawrence b. 14 July 1893 and Violet Margaret b. 1895. Mary Elizabeth died in 1897 and Frederick married secondly Maria Newbert (or Neboult) Bennett at Kirton Holy Trinity on 26 March 1900. In 1901 Frederick and Maria were living on East Parade, Whitwell, with three of Frederick's four children, Wilfred, Herbert and Margaret. Walter was living with his paternal grandparents in Kirton. By 1911 Frederick and Maria and two of the children, Herbert (17), a groom (domestic) and Violet, were living in Barnby Moor, near Retford, Nottinghamshire. Wilfred and Walter were both working on farms in Nottinghamshire. Frederick died in 1921 and his wife Maria in 1949. For more information about the family see Walter's record on this Roll of Honour (Walter Cecil, also Cecil Walter); he is commemorated on Sutton cum Lound St Bartholomew and Ranskill & Torworth St Barnabus memorials. Herbert and his two brothers answered the call. Of his two brothers, Charles Wilfred joined the Royal Field Artillery and served in France and Palestine but although wounded (gassed), survived the war, while Walter (aka Cecil Walter/Walter Cecil) served with the Sherwood Foresters andwas killed on the 15th September 1916. Walter is commemorated in the Ranskill & Torwith memorial book (St Barnabus) and on the Sutton cum Lound memorial (St Bartholomew). Although a Canadian Veterans' record of Herbert Lawrence show that he attested and was medically examined in Toronto, Canada, on 10th November 1914, no more is known of his military career. However, after the war Herbert married Jemima Brown on 29th January 1921 in Toronto, Canada, and emigrated to the United States in 1922 and worked as a servant. There is a record on an Outward Passenger List of a Herbert L Bullivant (42 b. 1893) occupation valet, last address the Ritz Hotel, London W1, departing Southampton on 28 September 1935 (SS Bremen) for New York. Herbert was issued with call-up papers for WW2 at the age of 48 from the US authorities so must have been a naturalized citizen.
Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force (55150). Attested and medically examined 10 November 1914 at Toronto, Canada. His occupation appears to be that of footman. He named his father, Frederick Bullivant of Barnby Moor, Nottinghamshire, as his next of kin.
Commemorated in Window 1. Although he did not die in the war, Herbert Lawrence's name was probably included on the church window as a soldier who served. His father and stepmother were resident in Torworth at this time. Original research by Colin Dannatt
