Family History

Alfred was the third son Frederick William Barnard a civil servant and Julia Maria Muriel Godrich, of 3 Windsor Road Denmark Hill. He was baptised at Holy Trinity Church Clapham on 11th August 1893. The address of the family on the baptism register was 10 Fitzwilliam Road. He was the brother of Frederick and Julia had five children;- Edward, Amy, John Fred, Alice Sophia Godrich.

Military History

Alfred enlisted in the Australian Infantry and served with the 7th battalion. He embarked on HMAT Runic which sailed from Melbourne on 20th June 1916 bound for the Western Front. He was killed in action on 9th August 1918 and is buried in Heath Cemetery Harbonniers, France (grave reference: III B 14).
