Arthur Hodson Smith was born in 1889 in Nottingham and was the son Joseph William a boot warehouseman and Mary Ethel Smith née Hobson of 11 Willoughby Avenue Lenton Nottinghamshire.His father John William Smith was born in 1862 in Basford and his mother Mary Ethel Hodson was born in 1861 in Nottingham, they were married in 1883 in Nottigham and went on to have 3 children , however their only other child listed on the 1901/01911 census is Ethel Mary b1893 Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family is living at 11 Willoughby Ave, Lenton and are shown as John William Smith 49 yrs a boot warehouseman, he is living with his wife Mary Ethel 50 yrs and their daughter Ethel Mary 18 yrs a domestic. In the same 1911 census Arthur has left his home address and is living as a lodger at Croft House, Hill Street, Ross, Herefordshire, he is shown as being 22 yrs a correspondent and general clerk for a solicitor, he is residing with Henry Willoughby 53 yrs an engraver and his family. Arthur married Muriel Wilson in 1917 at Nottingham and they lived at 16 The Chase Nottingham.

Military History

Second Lieutenant Arthur Hodson-Smith, served with 1/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment, died of wounds on 9th June 1918. He is buried in Pernes British Cemetery,Pas de Calais, France Grave Reference: 2 F 50

Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged) 27 June 1918: HODSON-SMITH, on June 9th, died of wounds, Second Lieutenant Arthur Hodson-Smith, Sherwood Foresters, age 29, second son of JW and Mrs Smith, 11 Willoughby Avenue, Lenton.In memoriam published 9th June 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :-“HODSON-SMITH. – In loving and cherished memory of Arthur, Sec.-Lieut., 1/5th Sherwoods, died of wounds at Pernesin-Artois, June 9th, 1918, dearly-loved son of J. W. and M. Smith, 11 Willoughby-avenue, Lenton. Sadly missed. – From father, mother, Will, and Ethel.“HODSON-SMITH. – In affectionate remembrance of 2nd Lieut. A.
