Family History

William Henry Lander was born in 1899 he was the son of Joseph a coal miner hewer and Mary Ann Lander née Hodgkinson of Poplar Street, Pleasley Hill, Mansfield. Joseph was born in 1878 at Somercotes, Mary Ann Hodgkinson was born in 1880 at Leabrooks, Derbyshire, they were married on 30th July 1898 at Alfreton, Derbyshire, they had 3 children. In 1911 the family lived at 219 New Houghton, Pleasley, Joseph 33 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 31 yrs and their children, William Henry 12 yrs John Joseph 9 yrs and Lorna May 2 yrs of age.

Military History

Private William Henry Lander enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Pleasley Hill, he served with the 7th battalion The Buffs (East Kent Regiment . He landed in France on 7th August 1918 and was killed in action on 22nd August 1918 and is buried at Albert Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme France.
