He was the son of William and Sarah Herrod. In 1911, he was living with his parents at Canal Street, Nottingham
Private Leslie Ewart Herrod, enlisted on 11th December 1915 at West Bridgford he was 18 yrs of age. He was placed into the reserves and was mobilised for war on 7th December 1916. He landed in France on 2nd June 1917 and served with “B” Company, 2nd Battalion Royal Scots, he died from gas poisoning on 23rd May 1918. He is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery.(grave ref IX.A.80).
Documentary evidence that he was associated with the Canaan Chapel, Broadmarsh, Nottingham (memorial missing). Personal inscription on CWGC headstone: 'Loving thoughts will ever wander to the grave where he is laid.' Death notification published 28th May 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- HERROD. – Died in hospital, from gas poisoning, May 23rd, in his 21st year, Leslie Ewart, Royal Scots, only son of Wm. and S.
