Gordon William Stirland was born in 1894 at Kimberley and was the son of James a lamplighter and Louisa Stirland née Millership of 26 Whyburn Street Hucknall Torkard Nottinghamshire and later at 1 Chalk Hill Kimberley. His father James was born in 1862 at Kimberley and his mother Louisa Millership was born in 1860 also at Kimberley, they were married in 1884, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have 9 children, sadly however 5 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, Lancelot b1885 Watnall, Nellie b1887 Watnall, Albert Edward b1892 Kimberley and Gordon William b1894 Kimberley. In the 1911 census the family are living at 26 Whyburn Street, Hucknall and are shown as James 49 yrs a lamplighter he is living with his wife Louisa 51 yrs and their children Albert Edward 19 yrs a colliery banksman and Gordon William 17 yrs a horse driver underground
Lance Corporal Gordon William Stirland enlisted at Kimberley and initially served with the service number 3827 in the Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment before transferring to the 16th battalion Manchester Regiment. He died of wounds on 7th August 1917 and is buried in Mendinghem Military Cemetery 4.B.5
