Lance Corporal John William Tomlinson, served with the 11th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, was killed accidentally on 22nd August 1916. He is buried in Dantzig Alley British Cemetery, Mametz. Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged), 23 September 1916: ‘L/Cpl JW Tomlinson KRR, late Court Street, Hyson Green, killed in action August 23rd (sic) age 30. Attested 7 September 1914, service reckoned from 7 September 1914. Joined 9 September 1914. Date of report 1 June 1916: deprived 7 days pay for ‘absent off leave from 12 midnight 26 December 1915 till Letter dated 8 December 1916, KRR Corps, Winchester to the officer 1/c Infantry Records, Reg. Infty Section No 2, GHQ, 3rd Echelon: ‘Please be good enough to furnish me with a reply to my letter 25119 of 26/10/16 and my reminder of 11/11/16 in which I requested you to forward to this office a copy of the Court of Enquiry held in the case of No R.3775 L/C JW Tomlinson, 11th (S) Bn, KRR Corps, who was accidentally killed in bomb explosion on 22/8/16.
