Joseph Edgar Mason was born in 1880 in Nottingham and was the only son of Joseph a police sergeant and Emma Mason née Huskisson. Joseph Edgar married Gertrude Ford on 27th January 1906 at Sneinton Parish Church , he went on to have two children, Gertrude Edna born 15th April 1916 and Joseph William born 20th August 1907, both were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census they lived at 6 St Alban's Terrace Nottingham and were shown as Joseph Edgar 31 yrs a police constable, he is living with his wife Gertrude 28 yrs and their children Gertrude Edna 5 yrs and Joseph William 3 yrs. At the time of his death the family were living at 8 Thoresby Ave, Sneinton, Nottingham
Private Joseph Edgar Mason enlisted on 16th March 1898 at Derby; he was 18 yrs and 2 months, his occupation was that of a clerk, his next of kin was his father, Joseph, of Queens Walk Police Station, Nottingham. He joined the Grenadier Guards at their depot in London on 21st March 1898 and served with the service number 7337. He went to Gibralter on 13th July 1899 returning home on 3rd October 1899. He served in South Africa from 18th March 1899 until 3rd August 1902 and returned to England on 4th August 1902. He was discharged, timed served, on 15th March 1914. At the outbreak of war he once again volunteered and served with the 1/1st South Notts. Hussars. He was killed in action on 22nd August 1915 and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Panel 16.
Notice of his death published 10th September 1915 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “MASON. – Killed in action, August 22nd, Joseph Edgar Mason, R.A.O.B., 1st South Notts. Hussars, dearly loved husband of Gertrude Mason, 8, Thoresby-avenue, late Nottingham City Police and Fire Brigade; also served in South African War. I never knew what pain he had, I never saw him die; I only know he passed away without a last good-bye. – From his sorrowing wife and children, mother, and mother-in-law.” 'In memoriam' notice published 22nd August 1916 in the Nottingham Evening Post: “MASON. – Killed in action August 22nd, 1915, Edgar, the beloved husband of Gertrude Mason. Sadly missed. – Wife and children. “MASON. – In loving memory of my dear son, Joseph Edgar Mason, killed in action August 22nd, 1915, in the Dardanelles.
