Arthur's RN record gives his date and place of birth and the information that the relative notified of his death was his widow, Florence, of 6 Stanley Road, Stamshaw, Portsmouth. No other records have yet been found to positively identify other relatives. Arthur was serving in HMS Boyne, a torpedo boat destroyer, 2nd Division Home Fleet, at Portland, Dorset in 1911. He was 26 years old and married. His service record shows that between June 1910 and May 1911 he was serving in HMS Blake, so he may have been on loan to Boyne. Florence has not been positively identified but in 1911 there was a Florence Nellie Rose (26, b. Lewis, Sussex) living at 1 Nile Street, Emsworth, Hertfordshire; Emsworth is close to Portsmouth. She had been married for two years, childless, and was described as head of household; she did needlework from home. It is possible that Florence and Arthur had married in 1909 as there is a record a of a Florence Emily (sic) Reed marrying an Arthur Rose in 1909 (A/M/J Westbourne, Sussex). There are also two records of birth that might relate to Arthur and Florence: Leslie AJ Rose who was born in 1912 (J/A/S Portsmouth) mother's maiden name Read (sic) and Ivy M Rose b. 1915 (J/A/S Portsmouth, Reed).
Arthur transferred from the Royal Marine Light Infantry (service number Po13891) to the Royal Navy as a Stoker 2nd Class on a 12 year engagement on 5 October 1906. Arthur served in the following ships and shore establishments: HMS Nelson, 5 October 1906-7 December 1906 (Stoker 2nd Class); HMS Glory, 8 December 1906-21 March 1907; HMS Victory, 22 March 1907-26 March 1907; HMS Emerald, 27 March 1907-1 April 1907; HMS Bonaventure, 2 April 1907-2 June 1909 (Stoker 1st Class 1 June 1907); HMS Blenheim, 3 June 1909-28 July 1910; HMS Blake, 29 June 1910-12 May 1911; Victory II, 13 May 1911-3 June 1911; HMS Furious, 4 June 1911-14 March 1912; HMS Vindictive, 15 March 1912-26 August 1912; HMS Speedwell, 27 August 1912-11 November 1912; Victory II, 15 November 1912-3 September 1913; HMS Queen Mary, 4 September 1913-31 May 1916. Service record annotated, ‘NP3925/1916. DD [discharged dead], 31st May 1916. Killed in action.’ Arthur was killed while serving in HMS Queen Mary at the Battle of Jutland. His body was not recovered for burial and he is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. HMS Queen Mary was the last battle cruiser built by the Royal Navy before World War I. She participated in the Battle of Heligoland Bight in 1914. As part of the 1st Battlecruiser Squadron, she attempted to intercept a German force that bombarded the North Sea coast of England in December 1914, but was unsuccessful. She was refitting in early 1915 and missed the Battle of Dogger Bank in January. At Jutland on May 31st 1916 she was hit twice by the German battle cruiser Derfflinger during the early part of the battle. Her magazines exploded shortly afterwards, sinking the ship. 1,266 crewmen were lost with eighteen survivors picked up by the destroyers HMS Laurel, HMS Petard and HMS Tipperary, and two by the Germans.
