Fred Archer was born in 1883 at Mansfield, he was the son of Charles a greengrocer and Elizabeth Archer née Chapman of 163 St Ann’s Well Road, Nottingham. His father Charles was born in 1857 at Mansfield, his mother Elizabeth Chapman was born in 1860 also at Mansfield, they were married on 2nd October 1891 at St Ann’s, Nottingham, they had 6 children, In the 1911 census the family are living at 163 St Ann’s Well Road, Nottingham, Charles 54 yrs is green grocer he is living with his wife Elizabeth 51 yrs a milliner and their children, Fred 27 yrs a gents outfitter, Edith 24 yrs a milliners shop assistant, Nellie 22 yrs a milliners shop assistant and Charles 21 yrs an eye specialist lab assistant. Military History

Private Fred Archer enlisted on 24th October 1903, at Nottingham, he served with the 2nd battalion Coldstream Guards, he landed in France on 12th August 1914 and was killed in action at Rental, on 28th October 1914 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial France.

Nottingham Evening Post obituary (abridged) 12 November 1914: 'ARCHER killed in action on October 28th, on his birthday, Fred Archer of the Coldstream Guards, age 31. Son of E Archer, 165 St Ann's Well Road.'Family headstone, Nottingham Church (Rock) Cemetery: 'Also her son [Elizabeth Archer] Fred Archer killed in action October 28th 1914, aged 31 years. Some day we'll understand.'
