He was the son of William and Susan Sheppard and the brother of William, Violet, Bertie, Lilian May, Clarence and Gertrude Sheppard. In 1901 they lived at 90 Beverley Street St Ann's Nottingham. He was the husband of Annie (née Cooper) Sheppard of 12 Roberts Street Sneinton Road Nottingham.

Obituary from the Nottingham Evening Post dated 27th September 1917 : - “SHEPPARD. – In loving memory of Corporal C. E. Sheppard, killed in action September 27th, 1916, beloved son of William and Alma Sheppard, of 90, Beverley-street. He marched away so bravely,his young head proudly held; his footsteps never faltered, his courage never failed; there on the field of battle he calmly took his place, he fought and died for England, and the honour of his race. – Sorrowing father, mother, sisters, and brothers (two with the colours, Ted in France). “SHEPPARD. – Killed in action September 27th, 1916, Corporal C. E. Sheppard.
