Family History

Leonard Goodson was born in 1895 at Nottingham, he was the son of Walter James a night stoker in steam yard and Mary Ann Goodson née Lupton of 38 Dickinson Street, St Ann’s Well Road, Nottingham . Walter James was born in 1857 at Goadby Marwood, Leicestershire, Mary Ann Lupton was born in 1860 at Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, they were married in 1883 their marriage was recorded in the Leicester registration district, they had 8 children, sadly two of whom died in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family lived at 45 Dickinson Street, St Ann’s Well Road, Nottingham, Walter James 54 yrs is a night stoker, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 51 yrs and their children, Cecil Edward 19 yrs a coal miner, Leonard 16 years a coal miner pony driver and Frederick 14 yrs an errand boy.

Military History

Private Leonard Goodson enlisted on 30th June 1913 at Nottingham, giving his age as 18 yrs and 6 months he was a coal miner pony driver, posted to the 1st battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, he was embodied on 5th August 1914. He was killed in action on 27th March 1915, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres, Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium.
