Family History

Herbert Clarke was born in 1881 at Nottingham, he was the son of Isaac Clarke a labourer and Elizabeth Clarke née Morley of 1 Howard Place, Howard St, Glasshouse Street, Nottingham. Isaac was born in 1847 at Basford Elizabeth Morley was born in 1847 in Fordham, Cambridgeshire, they were married in 1876 at Nottingham, they had 8 children sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood. Herbert married Maud Birkinshaw born 1883 on 1st December 1900 at St Mark’s Church, Nottingham, they went on to have 2 children, Charles William born 12th November 1902 and Richard born 31st January 1908. His wife died in 1908 at Nottingham she was 25 yrs of age. In the 1911 census Herbert Clarke is living at 1 Howard Place, Howard Street, Nottingham, he is living with his parents, he is shown as being 30 yrs a labourer and a widow, he is living with his parents Isaac 66 yrs a labourer and Elizabeth 64 yrs. His pension record card shows the guardians of his two children were for Charles William Mrs N A Haywood of 62 Oxford Road, Bulwell and for Richard was Mrs E Clark of 1 Bees Yard, Howard Street, Nottingham.

Military History

Gunner Herbert Clarke enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 51st Battery Royal Field Artillery, and was killed in action on 23rd May 1915 and is buried at St Marys A.D.S. Cemetery, Haisnes. France.
