Family History

Benjamin Hopewell was born in 1893 he was the son of John a coal miner deputy manager and Elizabeth Hopewell née Gent of Selston John was born in 1851 in Leicester, Elizabeth Gent was born in 1854 at Selston, they were married on 9th August 1873 at St Helens Church, Selston, they went on to have 10 children sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at Inkerman Road, Selston. John 60 yrs is a coal miner deputy manager, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 57 yrs and their son Benjamin 18 yrs a shop assistant.

Military History

Pioneer Benjamin Hopewell enlisted on 31st January 1916 giving his age as 23 years and 266 days, he was a grocers assistant, his next of kin was his father John, he was posted to the reserves. Mobilised for war 23rd September 1916 he was posted to the Royal Engineers. Landing in France on 18th April 1918 he died on 1st December 1918 of influenza and pneumonia and was buried in Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension, France
