Family History

James William Gregory was born in 1890 he was the son of Edward a coal miner hewer and Phoebe Gregory née Moore and the brother of Robert Edward, Clara, Louisa Jane, George HS, Lavina Lily and Arthur AT Gregory. of Portland Road, Selston. Edward was born in 1868 at London, Phoebe Ellen Moore was born 1869 at Selston, they were married in 1888 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district they had 8 children sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at Debdale Cottage, Selston, Edward is 43 yrs and is a coal miner hewer he is living with his wife Phoebe 42 yrs and their 7 children including James William 21 yrs a coal miner loader. ta They lived on Portland Road Selston Nottinghamshire.

Military History

James William Gregory enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Selston he served with the battalion at Gallipoli and in Egypt. He arrived in France with the battalion on 1 July 1916. On 26th September 1916 the battalion attacked as part of the Battle of Thiepval. The battalion took all of its objectives but at high cost. James was killed in action but has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial
