He was born in 1881 (J/F/M) the son of Nathan and Mary Cooper. He married Edith Eyre in 1905 (J/A/S, registered Nottingham). Edith was the daughter of Henry and Emma Eyre and had been born in Derbyshire in 1881 and was christened in Yeaveley, Derbyshire, on 22 May 1881. Ernest and Edith had had three children by the time of the 1911 Census, Ernest Joseph b. abt 1907 (registered J/F/M) and christened on 19 February 1907, Annie b. 1909 (registered A/M/J) and christened 13 July 1909 and Elsie May born 1910 (registered O/N/D). In 1911 Ernest (30) and Edith (29) were living at 8 Victory Yard, Barker Gate, Nottingham, with their three children, Ernest (4), Annie (2) and Elsie May (4 months). Ernest was a general labourer and Edith worked for a rag and paper merchant. By 1917 the family had moved to 27 Livelles Street, St Ann's, Nottingham.
He arrived in France 21 May 1915. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. He qualified for the 1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal.

Nottingham Evening Post notice (abridged), 3 October 1916: 'COOPER, killed in action September 15th, Private LE Cooper, Rifle Brigade, age 35. Wife, child (?children)' His widow, Edith, was his sole legatee. She received payments for herself and her children.
