He was the son of Thomas and Emma Wilkins of 52 Beverley Street St Ann's Well Road Nottingham. Louis married his wife Martha Pontefract (born 25th June 1883) in 1907 at Nottingham, they had the following children, Emily May born 6th May 198, Gladys Ada born 17th August 1909, Hilda Sylvia born 5th October 1910 John Thomas born 16th October 1912 and Louis Wilkins born 2nd July 1917. They lived at 2 Beverley Street in 1911 and later at 21 Dunscombe Street (both St Ann's Well Road Nottingham).
He served in the South African Campaign. He had twenty years service and had fought at Mons. He was reported as missing, and was later confirmed as killed in action during an attack on the Quadrilateral near Holnon Village, France. His name was commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial (Panel 7)
In memoriam published 13th December 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “WILKINS. – In ever-loving memory of my dear husband and dadda, Sergt. Louis Wilkins, 2nd Sherwoods, missing September 17th-19th, 1918, now reported killed, after 20 years' service. Gone from our home, and how we miss him, loving him dearly, his memory we keep; not while life lasts shall we ever forget him, but oh, how we long to know where he sleeps. – Loving wife and five children. “WILKINS. – In proud and loving memory of Sergt. L. Wilkins, 2nd Sherwood Foresters, reported wounded and missing on September 18th, 1918, now presumed killed on that date, after 20 years' service, one of Mons heroes.
