Family History

Thomas Banton was born in 1879 he was the son of George and Eliza Banton and the brother of Joseph, George, John, William and Mary Banton. In 1881 they lived on High Street Ticknall. Thomas married Annie Parker in 1906 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had children, Eunice (b.13/10/1907), Joseph b.24/10/1909) and Ruby Banton (b.153/1916). They lived on Poplar Terrace Selston.

Military History

Sergeant Thomas Banton had previously enlisted in 2nd Battalion Coldstream Guards and was time served. He enlisted on 27th August 1914 at Mansfield, Nottinghamshire and served with the 9th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was appointed Lance Corporal 20th October 1914 and promoted Corporal, 21st October 1914. He was promoted Sergeant 22nd July 1915. He went to France 6th June 1917 and was killed in action, 21st July 1917, aged 37., by German shellfire whilst in the line north of Ypres, Belgium. Buried La Belle Alliance Cemetery, Belgium. Row C.
