Family History

Arthur Morris was born in 1895 the son of Martin a labourer and Sophia Morris. His parents were both born in Birmingham , his father in 1858 and his mother in 1859. They were married c.1879 and went on to have 13 children 3 of whom died in infancy or early childhood. Their surviving children listed on the 1891/1901/1911 censuses were John b.1884, Ellen b.1885, James b.1887, Margaret b.1888, Joseph b.1893, Arthur b.1895, Martha b.1897, Sarah b.1899 and Samuel b.1903. In 1911 they lived at 11 Carter Place Sneinton. He was the nephew of John and Mary Wells of 12 Owen Street Gordon Road St Ann's Nottingham.

He is buried in Foncquevillers Military Cemetery (grave ref I.L.51)

Nottingham Evening Post, 'Roll of Honour', 15 July 1916 (abridged): 'Morris, killed in action July 1st, Bugler Arthur Morris, Sherwood Foresters, aged 23 years, of 12 Owen Street.' Arthur's brother John was killed in action 19/6/1915 Arthur Morris was one of three soldiers buried in the same grave: Second Lieutenant A C Watkins North Staffordshire Regiment and 1585 L/Cpl A Dominic 1/7th Sherwood Foresters who both also died on 1 July 1916. Arthur Dominic is also commemorated on this Roll of Honour.
