He was the son of John Thomas Watts, born in 1877 at Derby, who worked as a brick carter before becoming a coal hewer. His mother Ada Watts was born in 1875 at Derby. His sister Emily was born in 1902 at Derby. The family lived at 7 Truman Street, Ilkeston Junction, Derbyshire before moving to 7 Swanwick Street, St. Ann's Well Road, Nottingham.
Watts volunteered for service and attested on 06/06/1915 at Nottingham. He was posted to 17th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters the same day. He embarked for France on 06/03/1916. The battalion was engaged in fighting at the very start of the Third battle of Ypres and Watts was killed in action. He was buried at Track X Cemetery, near Ypres.
