Family History

Percy was the son of Elijah a railway porter and Elizabeth Mason. He was the brother of Fred and Lilla Mason. In 1891 the family lived at Lamcote Grove Meadows Nottingham. By 1901 Percy was an orphan (Elizabeth died in 1892 and Elijah in 1895) and an inmate at Muller's Orphan House Bristol. He served as a regular in the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters prior to Great War and was with the unit in Devon in 1911.

Military History

Percy Mason was in 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters and went to France with them 8 September 1914, making him an 'Old Contemptible' At sometime he was wounded or was taken ill and returned to the UK. He then went with 9th Battalion to Gallipoli where he was again wounded and began the journey home firstly via the aid post on Gallipoli, then to Malta for more treatment. He was sent to one of the over thirty hospitals in Manchester where he died and was buried in Manchester Southern Cemetery. John Morse
