Born in 1889, William was the son of Richard Edward and Lucy Ann Lang and the brother of Richard, Lilly, Charles Henry (killed in action 8/8/1916), Reginald, Florence Elizabeth, George Ernest (killed in action 18/9/1916), Ellen Mabel, Richard Edward, Annie, Violet Mabel and Sarah Ann Lang. In 1901 the family lived in Ilminster Somerset and in 1911 at 11 Milk Street, Glasshouse Street Nottingham. William married Annie Clements, a lace hand, at Nottingham in September 1910 and in 1911 they lived at 5 Wollaton Place, Woolpack Lane Nottingham. They had four children – Gladys (1911-1911), Edith (b. 1912), William C (b. 1914) and Florence M (1916-1916). Prior to William's death, Annie moved to 6 Wilford Cottages, Goodhead Street, Wilford Road, Nottingham. With effect from 20/11/1916, she was awarded a weekly pension of 20s/6d.
William enlisted on 28th October 1914 in Nottingham and became one of thirty one Sherwood Foresters killed during the 1916 Easter Rising in Ireland. He was fatally wounded during the attack on 25 Northumberland Road or Mount Street Bridge. He is buried in Deans Grange Cemetery, Dublin: Special Memorial.
