Family History

William Claude was born in 1899 in Nottingham and was the son of Samuel Edwards and Sarah Ann Edwards née Etherington . Samuel Edwards and Sarah Ehterington were married in 1895 in Nottingham , they went on to have two children William Claude b1899 and Florence Gertrude b1900 both born in Nottingham. His father Samuel died in 1900 he was 23 yrs of age, his mother went on to re marry Alfred Elliott Wheatley in 1902 in Nottingham, they went on to have the following children, Elsie Elizabeth b1904, Nellie b1906, Alfred Elliott b 1908 and Edna b1910 all born in Nottingham. . In 1911 census the family were living at 9 Rushton Terrace Twells Street St Ann's Nottingham.

Military History

Private William Claude Edwards attested on 1st April 1915 at Nottingham he gave his address as 41 Duncombe St, St Ann's Well Road, Nottingham, he gave his age as 19 yrs. ( he was born in 1898 and therefore only 17 yrs of age) He was posted to the 7th battalion Sherwood Foresters. He landed in France on 1st June 1916 and within a month on 1st July 1916 he was killed in action of the first day of the Battle of the Somme. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
