James Burton was born in 1896 in Old Basford, Nottingham and was the son of James a hosiery bleacher and Harriett Anne Turner Burton, née Webb of 68, Park Lane, Old Basford, Nottingham. His father James was born in 1864 in Old Basford and his mother Harriett Anne Turner Webb was born in 1865 in Oxfordshire, they were married in 1882, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have 14 children , sadly 4 of whom died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were all born in Old Basford and were : Arthur Ernest b1883, George b1886, Jenny b1891, Florrie b1893, Ada b1895, James b1896, Hilda b1899, Amanda b1902, Phyllis b1904 and Alice b1907. In the 1911 census the family are living at 68 Park Lane Old Basford and are shown as James 47 yrs a hosiery bleacher, he is living with his wife Harriett Ann 46 yrs and their children Arthur 28 yrs a lace bleacher, George 25 yrs a van man, Jenny 20 yrs a hosiery ironer, Florrie 18 yrs a clipper and scalloper, Ada 16 yrs a lace curtain mender, James 15 yrs a rubber coverer, Hilda 12 yrs a scholar, Amanda 9 yrs a scholar, Phyllis 7 yrs a scholar and Alice 4 yrs.

Military History

Private James Burton enlisted in Nottingham and served with the 17th battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment he was killed in action on 3rd September 1916 and was buried in Ancre British Cemetery, Beaumont Hamel
