Bert Phillips was born in Worksop in 1889. He was the eldest son of John ‘Jack’ and Sarah Phillips, who had registered him John Bertie Phillips but always referred to as Bert. He had 4 brothers. Bert’s father was a handmade chair maker which was a skilled industry in Worksop at that time. The whole family, including the parents, were born in Worksop. The initial family home was in Church Walk but moved on to Priorswell Road by 1901 and eventually resided in 59 Garside Street. Bert took a job as a grinder in the local steel works and in 1909 married Grace Dernie and had a son before enlisting in the army. Although he appears in the 1911 census as a married man, he is living with his parents in Garside Street and not with his wife. His pension record card shows he was seperated from his wife Grace (born 16th May 1886) and they had a son Bertie born 23rd December 1908, they lived at 66 Kilton Road, Worksop. Following his death his widow was awarded a pension of 12 shillings a week which commenced on 9th April 1918.
Pte Bert Phillips Worksop Guardian 12 October 1917 Information has been received this week from the War Office by Mrs. Phillips, 66, Kilton Road, Worksop, stating that her husband, Pte. Bert Phillips, Royal Fusiliers, was killed in action on September 20th. Pte. Phillips was a native of Worksop, and the eldest son of Mr. Jack Phillips, Garside Street. He was a fine built soldierly man, standing nearly six feet in height, and previous to enlistment worked at Messrs. Steel and Garland’s foundry, Kilton Road. Pte. Phillips was an able workman, and was held in high esteem by his employers and fellow employees alike. Enlisting in May this year, and after training at Brocton, he went to France in July, prior to which he spent a few days leave at home. Pte. Phillips, who was only 30 years of age, leaves a widow and one little boy, which whom much sympathy has been expressed in their great bereavement.
