Bert’s father was a handmade chair maker which was a skilled industry in Worksop at that time. The whole family, including the parents, were born in Worksop. The initial family home was in Church Walk but moved on to Priorswell Road by 1901 and eventually resided in 59 Garside Street. Bert took a job as a grinder in the local steel works and in 1909 married Grace Dernie and had a son before enlisting in the army. Although he appears in the 1911 census as a married man, he is living with his parents in Garside Street and not with his wife. His pension record card shows he was seperated from his wife Grace (born 16th May 1886) and they had a son Bertie born 23rd December 1908, they lived at 66 Kilton Road, Worksop. Following his death his widow was awarded a pension of 12 shillings a week which commenced on 9th April 1918.
