Amelia Cole already had a child, Clara, when she married George Marsden in Sheffield in 1890. They set up home in Georges’ home town of Worksop at Boundary Row. Over the next 10 years, the couple produced 5 more children, all born in Boundary Row, Worksop, George William born 1893, Charles Frederick born 1894, Eva in 1896, Robert Samuel in1899 and Elizabeth born 1900. George had been a coal miner all his working life and in 1911 both of his eldest sons, William and Charles, followed in his footsteps by working in the mines as pit pony drivers. By now the family had moved to 18 King Street, and it was from this address that Charles Frederick Marsden enlisted at Worksop on the 29 Aug 1914
Charles Frederick Marsden enlisted at Worksop in the Lincolnshire regiment on 29 August 1914 age 21. After his training he was drafted to the British Mediterranean Force in the middle of 1915. In November 1915 he was admitted to hospital in the Dardanelles and also admission to a Malta hospital with frostbite two weeks later. From here he went to Alexandria landing March 1916 where he joined his base depot. He left Alexandria on the 2nd July 1917 and arrived at Marsaillon, France, a week later. The rest of his time in the war was spent in France with leave being granted to the UK, 10 days in August 1917 and 14 days in January 1918. He was killed in action on the 10th October 1918, only a month before the end of hostilities
