Arthur Leonard Birch was the youngest child of James Birch & Lucy Ann Glover, who married at Nottingham in 1882. Five of their six children were alive in 1911. They were; Florence, born in 1883, Frederick James, born in 1884, George Alfred, born in 1886, Albert, born in 1893 and Arthur Leonard, born in 1897. All were born in Nottingham. James Birch was employed as a lace curtain draughtsman, but died in 1904. His widow died in 1936. The family lived at 132 Forster Street, Radford, 11 Dorking Road, Radford, 34 Wordsworth Road, Radford and finally at 9 Coleridge Street, Radford.
Birch served with 'A' Company, 1/7th Battalion Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment. In April 1918 the German army launched their Flanders offensive Operation Georgette, which aim to split the British army and capture the Channel ports. The line bulged backwards but despite huge pressure did not break. Birch died of wounds in the fighting of 28/04/1918, and was buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery.
