Christopher Frederick Warren

Christopher was the eldest son of Frederick (Fred) and Louisa Warren nee Norman. Both parents were born in Northamptonshire. Frederick, the son of William Warren, a publican, and his wife Sophia of Sheep Street, Northampton, was born on 26 March 1857 and baptised on 6 September 1857 at Northampton St Sepulchre. Louisa, the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Norman, was born in 1857 and baptised on 6 September 1857 at Northampton St Edmund. They were married in 1883 (O/N/D Northampton) and had five children, all of whom were born in Nottingham: Christopher Frederick b. 14 September 1883, Arthur Noel (Noel A on some census) birth registered 1886 J/F/M Nottingham, Margaret Mary b. 29 April 1889 (A/M/J Nottingham), Winifred Eleanor b. 5 July 1890 (J/A/S Nottingham) and Barbara Phyllis b. 21 April 1893 (A/M/J Nottingham). In 1891 Fred (33) and Louisa (33) were living in St Ann's, Nottingham, with their four children, Christopher (6), Noel (4), Margaret (2) and Winifred (9 months). Also in the house was Mary E Prince (16, b. Shardlow Derbyshire), a general domestic servant. By 1901 the family was living at 20 Stratford Road, West Bridgford. Fred (43) was a piano tuner. Also in the household on the night of the census were his wife Louisa (43) and their four youngest children; Noel (15) a grocer's clerk, Margaret (11), Winifred (10) and Phyllis (7). There is a record of a Christopher Warren (17, b. St Ann's Nottingham), Private in the 4th Battalion Notts and Derby Regiment, who on the night of the 1901 Census was in the Single and Married Soldiers' Quarters at Normanton Barracks, Normanton, Derby. However, there is a Royal Marine Light Infantry record that suggests Christopher joined the RMLI at the end of April 1901. Fred, now described as a teacher and musician, and Louisa were still living at 20 Stratford Road in 1911. Only their three daughters were at home on the night of the census: Margaret (21) of no occupation, Winifred (20) a teacher of music on her own account, and Barbara (17) who worked in a fancy warehouse (maker of neckwear). Christopher, now an Acting PO Stoker, was serving in HMS Lancaster in the Mediterranean at the time of the 1911 Census. Arthur has not yet been positively traced on the 1911 Census, but he may have joined the Royal Navy on 8 January 1902 on a 12 year engagement. A record in the Register of Seamen's Services for an Arthur Warren, born Nottingham, gives his date of birth as 29 December 1883 but the record is also annotated 'true date of birth 25 December 1885'. Arthur Noel's birth was registered in the first quarter of 1886 so he could have been born in the December. By giving an earlier year of birth he would have been able to join immediately on a 12 year engagement instead of having to wait until his 18th birthday. He joined as a probationary sick berth attendant and at the time of the 1911 Census there was an Arthur Warren serving in the Royal Naval Hospital, East Stonehouse, Devon, as a 2nd Sick Berth Steward aged 25 years old (his true age). The census describes him as 'married' and there is a record of an Arthur Warren whose marriage was registered in Basford in 1908 (J/A/S). Arthur extended his 12 year engagement on 8 January 1914 'to completion' and was finally discharged shore on 18 October 1922. Christopher married Rose Ethel Spencer (b. 21 November 1891, O/N/D Strood) in 1914 (O/N/D Strood). The CWGC record has Rose's address as 10 Roach Street, Cuxton Road, Strood, Rochester. Rose married Harry E Spencer in 1924 (J/F/M Medway Kent) and died in 1986 (Feb Shepway Kent) aged 94. Fred Warren died in 1923 aged 66 and Louisa in 1938 aged 80. Of Christopher's siblings: Arthur Noel died on 7 May 1956; the record of Probate gave his address as 53 Clumber road, West Bridgford. Margaret Mary married Harry P Dixon in 1919 (O/N/D Nottingham). She died on 20 September 1974 aged 85. The record of Probate gave her address as 55 Clumber Road, West Bridgford. Winifred Eleanor married Ferdinand J Penney in 1921 (A/M/J Nottingham). She died on 16 January 1982. The record of Probate gave her address as the Grange Nursing Home, Elm Avenue, Attenborough, Nottinghamshire. Barbara Phyllis married Leslie R Taylor in 1923 (A/M/J Nottingham). She died in 1992 (January Horsham West Sussex) aged 98. The record of Probate gave her address as Kentwyns, Kerves Lane, Horsham.
