Family History

Tom was the elder son of William and Rachel Ann Greenwood (née Jowett). His parents were married in 1888 (reg. Wharfedale Yorkshire) and had four children who were all born in Baildon, Yorkshire: Lilian b. 1888, Maud b. 1890, Tom b. 1892 and Fairbank birth registered 1894 (J/F/M). In 1901 William, a carter, and Rachel were living at 6 Westgate, Baildon, with their four children and William's sister, Mary Greenwood. By 1911 the family was at 1 Westgate: William, a carter, Rachel, Lilian (22) a worsted burler, Maud (21) a worsted weaver, Tom (18) a blacksmith and Fairbank (17) a corker (zinc & ironsmith). Mary Greenwood, a worsted weaver, was still living with the family. Tom was still living with his parents on Westgate when he married Emily Bostwick (29 b. 1888) of Stairfoot, on 22 September 1917 at Ardsley, Yorkshire (reg. Barnsley). The CWGC record gives Emily's address as 74 St James's Street, Nottingham. Tom's mother probably died in 1929. His two unmarried sisters, Maud and Lilian, and their aunt Mary Greenwood, were still living on Westgate, Baildon, when the England & Wales Register was compiled in 1939.

Military History

23rd Signal Coy, Royal Engineers Tom died of illness in Nottingham on 21 February 1919 (death registered 1919 J/F/M Nottingham). He was buried in the Wesleyan Methodist Chapelyard, Baildon, Yorkshire. His is the only CWGC burial.
