Joseph Buttery was born in 1896 at Nottingham and was the son of Joseph a postman and Alice Buttery née Porter. His father Joseph was born in 1868 at Sheffield and his mother was born in 1867 at Ashby de la Zouch. They were married on 8th January 1895 at Christ Church Linton, Church Greasley, Derbyshire. They went on to have the following children, Joseph b1896, Constance b1900, Eric b1906 and Harold b1908 all were born in Nottingham. In the 1911 census the family is living at 4 Eckington Terrace, Glapton Road, Meadows, Nottingham, and are shown as Joseph 43 yrs a postman, who is living with his wife Alice 44 yrs and their children, Joseph 15 yrs a telegraph messenger for the post office, Constance 11 yrs, Eric 5 yrs and Harold 3 yrs. The family was still living at 3 Eckington Terrace when Joseph enlisted in 1914 but later lived at 36 Thurgaton Street, Sneinton Hollows, Nottingham. Joseph was discharged from the army in 1916 and his army record shows he returned to his parents' home at 36 Thurgaton Street.
Not recorded on CWGC. Private Joseph Buttery enlisted on 30th October 1914 at Nottingham. He gave his age as 19 yrs and his address as 3 Eckington Terrace, Glapton Road, Nottingham. His next of kin was his father Joseph of the same address. He stated that he was a clerk. Joseph was posted to the 2/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment and promoted to Lance Corporal on 5th February 1915 and to Acting Corporal on 29th January 1916. He appeared before a medical board on 11th April 1916 and found to be unfit for further military service due to phthisis and tuberculosis. He was discharged from the Army on 1st May 1916 and awarded a Silver War Badge number 7176. His discharge address was 36 Thurgarton Street, Nottingham. He did not serve abroad. His pension card states he died on 28th March 1917.
