Arthur Leonard Wilson was the son of Herbert Arthur Wilson and Ada Day who married at Radford St Peter’s Church in April 1895. Their children included: Arthur Leonard (b.1896), Bernard Owen (b.1898), Herbert Alfred (b.1901) and Wilfred Victor (b.1906). The Wilson family lived at 36 Middle Street, Beeston [C.1901]. In 1906 Ada Wilson died at Nottingham, aged 38. So the 1911 census found Herbert Arthur Wilson, a widower with his four children, living with his two unmarried sisters, Elizabeth and Rebecca Wilson, at 177 Norton Street Radford. This address was also given in the death notice placed in the local newspaper for Lance Corporal Wilson [n.e.p.29.8.1916]. In Bernard Wilson’s Army papers [see additional information] it gave two addresses for Herbert Arthur Wilson - 177 Norton Street but also a later one 3 Forster Street, Radford [1921]. It is not clear what subsequently happened to Herbert Arthur Wilson, who worked as a furnace tender. He may have moved to Derby; if so he died there, aged 68, in 1932.
He enlisted at Nottingham; killed on the opening day of the Battle of the Somme; as his body was never recovered his name was added to the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
His brother Bernard Wilson served with the 7th Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment [Service No.62246] from 8 December 1915 until 18 November 1919. When he enlisted in November 1921 with the 7th [Territorial] Bn. Sherwood Foresters [Service No.4964754] he gave his home address 177 Norton Road, Radford
