Family History

Arthur Wright was born in 1892 in Nottingham and was the son of Arthur, a lace draughtsman, and Harriett Wright née Skevington of 6 Beck Street, Nottingham. His father Arthur was born in 1867 in Radford and his mother Harriett Skevington was born in 1868 in Nottingham. They were married in Nottingham on 31st December 1887 and went on to have four children, one of whom sadly died in infancy. Their surviving children, all born in Nottingham, were: John Henry b1888, Ada Ellen b1889 and Arthur b1892. His father Arthur was to die young aged 27 yrs on 23rd January 1894; he died in Nottingham. In the 1911 census we find the family living at 6 Beck Street, Nottingham, and are shown as Ada Ellen 22 yrs, single, head of the family and a machinist, living with her is her widowed mother Harriett 43 yrs a housekeeper and her two brothers John Henry 23 yrs a grocer's warehouseman and Arthur 19 yrs a barber's assistant. Arthur seems to have moved out to Boston, Lincolnshire, where he is recorded as attesting into the Army in August 1914 In his army service record there is a ‘bastardy order’ which was taken out on 28th May 1913 by a Miss Beatrice Lillian Coupland of 1 Rowell Row, Skirbeck, Boston, Lincolnshire. In the order he is ordered to make payments of 2 shillings and 6 pence a week (plus costs of £2 and 1 shilling for making of the order) for a child born on 20th April 1913. He is to make the weekly payments from the date of the child’s birth until its 16th birthday to cover its maintenance and education.

Military History

Arthur attested at Boston on 19th August 1914. He gave his age as 22 yrs and 196 days and that he was a barber; his next of kin was his mother Harriett Wright of 6 Beck Street, Nottingham. He served with the 6th battalion Lincolnshire Regiment (Private 6/10067). His medal index card shows that he first entered a theatre of war on 18th July 1915 in the Balkans. He was killed in action within a week on 24th July 1915 at Gallipoli. He is buried in Redoubt Cemetery, Cape Helles, Gallipoli and commemorated on a special memorial, B173.

Inscription on commemorative stone, Redoubt Cemetery, Cape Helles: 'Believed to be buried in this cemetery. 6/10067 Private A Wright Lincolnshire Regiment. 24 July 1915. Their glory shall not be blotted out.' His brother John Henry Wright also served during the Great War. He attested on 10th December 1915 in Nottingham giving his age as 27 yrs and 7 months and his occupation as a grocer's assistant; he was living with his wife at 11 Burgess Terrace, Storer Street, Nottingham. He was posted to the Reserve and mobilised for war on 13th January 1917 joining at Newcastle and was posted to the Royal Field Artillery. He survived the war, being demobbed on 19th December 1919.
