Arthur Wright

Arthur Wright was born in 1892 in Nottingham and was the son of Arthur, a lace draughtsman, and Harriett Wright née Skevington of 6 Beck Street, Nottingham. His father Arthur was born in 1867 in Radford and his mother Harriett Skevington was born in 1868 in Nottingham. They were married in Nottingham on 31st December 1887 and went on to have four children, one of whom sadly died in infancy. Their surviving children, all born in Nottingham, were: John Henry b1888, Ada Ellen b1889 and Arthur b1892. His father Arthur was to die young aged 27 yrs on 23rd January 1894; he died in Nottingham. In the 1911 census we find the family living at 6 Beck Street, Nottingham, and are shown as Ada Ellen 22 yrs, single, head of the family and a machinist, living with her is her widowed mother Harriett 43 yrs a housekeeper and her two brothers John Henry 23 yrs a grocer's warehouseman and Arthur 19 yrs a barber's assistant. Arthur seems to have moved out to Boston, Lincolnshire, where he is recorded as attesting into the Army in August 1914 In his army service record there is a ‘bastardy order’ which was taken out on 28th May 1913 by a Miss Beatrice Lillian Coupland of 1 Rowell Row, Skirbeck, Boston, Lincolnshire. In the order he is ordered to make payments of 2 shillings and 6 pence a week (plus costs of £2 and 1 shilling for making of the order) for a child born on 20th April 1913. He is to make the weekly payments from the date of the child’s birth until its 16th birthday to cover its maintenance and education.
