John Morris was born in 1884 the son of Martin a labourer and Sophia Morris. His parents were both born in Birmingham , his father in 1858 and his mother in 1859. They were married c.1879 and went on to have 13 children 3 of whom died in infancy or early childhood. Their surviving children listed on the 1891/1901/1911 censuses were John b.1884, Ellen b.1885, James b.1887, Margaret b.1888, Joseph b.1893, Arthur b.1895, Martha b.1897, Sarah b.1899 and Samuel b.1903. In 1911 they lived at 11 Carter Place Sneinton. John married Emma Sheppard (a spinster) at the Nottingham Registry office on 16th January 1912. John’s army service record lists his 4 children , James Sheppard born 13th June 1905, Maggie Sophia Morris born 19th May 1908, Martin Thomas Morris 15th June 1910 and Kate Morris born 28th July 1913. At the time of his death he and his family were living at 4 Pearson's Yard, Pierpont Street, Nottingham. Following his death Emma was awarded a pension of 22 shillings and 6 pence in respect of her and her 4 children with effect from 10th January 1916. She married John Clay at Nottingham in 1918 and they lived at 215 Waterway Street, Nottingham.
John Morris enlisted on 9th September 1914 at Nottingham. He stated he had seen previous service with the 4th Battalion Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment. He served with the 1st Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment and landed in France on 2nd May 1915. He was killed by German shelling on 19th June 1915. He is buried in Neuve- Chapelle British Cemetery.
John's younger brother Arthur Morris served in the 7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters and was killed in action on 1st July 1916. He is buried in Foncquevillers Military Cemetery.
